Why finishing your full antibiotic course matters — and what happens when you stop early.
What Are Antibiotics?
Antibiotics are powerful medicines that fight bacterial infections. They have saved millions of lives since their discovery. However, misuse is creating a global crisis called antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Why You Must Complete the Full Course
Many patients stop taking antibiotics once they feel better — often after 2 or 3 days. This is a dangerous habit. Here is why:
- Bacteria are not fully eliminated — Feeling better does not mean all bacteria are dead. Stopping early leaves the strongest, most resistant bacteria alive.
- Surviving bacteria multiply — These resistant bacteria reproduce, creating an infection that is harder to treat.
- Resistance spreads — Resistant strains can spread to others in your household and community.
Common Mistakes Nigerians Make
- Buying antibiotics over the counter without a prescription
- Sharing antibiotics with family members
- Taking antibiotics for viral infections like the common cold or flu (antibiotics do NOT work on viruses)
- Saving leftover antibiotics "for next time"
The Right Approach
Always obtain antibiotics from a licensed pharmacy with a valid prescription. Complete the full prescribed course even if you feel better. If you experience serious side effects, contact your pharmacist or doctor — do not simply stop.
