Living With Diabetes in Nigeria
Type 2 diabetes is increasingly common in Nigeria, affecting millions of people across all age groups. The good news is that with the right habits, diabetes can be effectively managed and complications prevented.
Blood Sugar Monitoring
Regular self-monitoring of blood glucose is essential. Aim to check your blood sugar:
- Fasting (before breakfast) — target: 4.0–7.0 mmol/L (72–126 mg/dL)
- 2 hours after meals — target: less than 10.0 mmol/L (180 mg/dL)
- Before bed — target: 6.0–8.0 mmol/L
Diet and Nutrition
- Reduce refined carbohydrates — white rice, white bread, eba, and fufu cause rapid blood sugar spikes. Prefer brown rice, oats, and whole-grain options.
- Increase vegetables and fibre — leafy greens, garden eggs, and beans slow glucose absorption.
- Control portion sizes — Eat smaller, more frequent meals instead of one or two large meals.
- Limit sugary drinks — Sodas, bottled juices, and malt drinks raise blood sugar rapidly.
- Stay hydrated — Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Medication Compliance
If prescribed metformin, insulin, or other diabetes medications, take them exactly as directed every day — even when you feel fine. Blood sugar can be dangerously high without obvious symptoms.
- Never skip doses
- Store insulin properly (refrigerated, away from direct sunlight)
- Carry your medication when travelling
Exercise
30 minutes of moderate exercise (brisk walking, cycling, swimming) 5 days a week significantly improves insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control.
